Malpighia pallens Small, sp. nov
Leaf-blades oblong or elliptic, varying to broadest above the middle or below it, 5-9 cm. long, obtuse or acutish, undulate, light-green, scarcely paler beneath than above, glabrous above, usually with few persistent hairs beneath, very short-petioled ; cymes peduncled, the branches ultimately glabrous ; sepals ovate, 2-2.5 mm. long, the glands fully one half the length of the sepal-body; corolla not seen ; drupes ovoid-pyramidal, 14-16 mm. long, apparently red.
Type collected at Judith's Fancy, St. Croix, West Indies, April 26, 1896, Alfred E. Ricksccker 378 (herb. N. Y. Bot. Gard.).
Distribution : Known only from the type locality.

Malpighia urens infestissima A. Juss. in Walp. Repert. 5 : 151. 1845.
Leaf-blades ovate to oval-ovate, 3-12 cm. long, rounded at the apex and varying from retuse to mucronate, undulate, pale-green, scarcely paler beneath than above, more or less coarsely reticulate, sparingly hispid and with few appressed hairs, rounded or cordate at the base, nearly sessile ; cymes peduncled, the branches sparingly pubescent at least during anthesis; sepals oblong to oval-oblong, 3-3.5 mm. long, the glands fully one-half the length of the sepal-body ; corolla white or pink, 20-25 mm. wide, the larger petals 9-13 mm. long ; drupes pyramidal-ovoid, 10-16 mm. long, red.
Type locality : St. Thomas, West Indies. Distribution : Porto Rico and Danish West Indies.
