This is a very common species, found on trees and rocks; its lobes have a slightly inflated appearance. The example shown in this photo was growing on the wooden railing of a footbridge (this bridge was later replaced, during maintenance and widening of the cycle route that was carried out in late 2008 / early 2009). This specimen has greyish areas that can be seen, on closer inspection, to be made up of numerous tiny black dots (in this photo, they are visible above the centre of the lichen, and to its upper left). These dots are the openings of pycnidia, flask-shaped chambers embedded in the lichen; these chambers produce asexual spores called conidia. Spore-producing discs are fairly uncommon in this species, and none were present in this specimen. When wood decays, lichens appear at different stages of the decay. H. physodes is one that appears in the early stages; the wood of this footbridge was not particularly decayed. Compare a similar species:
