This can readily be distinguished from all other Niebla spp. in North America by its conspicuous bluish powdery soralia. Only one other species grows on trees, N. ceruchis from southern California and Baja California.

Species of Ramalina have flattened branches or are distinctly beard-like and pendulous.

Species of Usnea are more well-branched, with fine terminal branchlets or fibrils, and all Usnea contain a stretchy rubber-band-like central cord.

Species of Evernia and Pseudevernia have flattened branches and never as smooth.
