Pileus fleshy, convex to nearly plane, 4-22 cm. broad, covered in the center by a single large irregular fragment or by small fragments of the volva; surface grayish-brown or leadcolored, sometimes ochraceous or cream-colored, margin striate; context white, of mild flavor; lamellae adnexed, sinuate, unequal, subcrowded, white or cremeous; spores broadly ellipsoid, smooth, hyaline, often uninucleate, usually with an oblique apiculus at one end, 8-12X6-8 n stipe subequal, white, striate at the top, floccose, hollow, 8-12 cm. long, 1-4 cm. thick; annulus slight, evanescent; volva white, prominent, 2-4 cm. long.
Type locality: Claremont, California. Habitat : In groves or forests. Distribution : California .
