Description

Medium to large evergreen tree. Leaves imparipinnate with 3-4 pairs of leaflets and a terminal leaflet. Leaflets opposite or alternate, obovate to oblanceolate, glossy green above, glabrous or somewhat hairy below; margins entire. Flowers in short axillary sprays, creamy white; petals more than 2 cm. Fruit a spherical, velvety capsule, c. 3.5 cm in diameter, splitting into 3-4 valves, revealing black seeds, largely hidden in a bright orange-red aril.

Die Bosrooiessenhout (Trichilia dregeana) is 'n middelmatige tot groot woudboom wat ook bekend staan as die Basteressenhout. Dit is inheems aan woude van die Oos-Kaap tot in tropiese Afrika.

Beskrywing

Die sewe tot elf blaartjies van die groot saamgestelde blaar het sewe tot twaalf sywaartse are, tipies minder as by die eenderse Rooiessenhout. Die vrug is rooierig bruin en sferies, en sowat 3 cm in deursnee. Soos by die Rooiessenhout word die swart sade byna omhul deur 'n rooi aril.[1]

Trichilia dregeana, commonly known as the forest natal-mahogany, is a tree in the family Meliaceae. These trees are found in forest areas from the Eastern Cape of South Africa to Tropical Africa.

Description

The 7 to 11 leaflets of the large compound leaf have 7 to 12 lateral veins, typically less than the related Natal mahogany. The dehiscent fruit is reddish brown, spherical and about 3 cm in diameter. As with the Natal mahogany, each black seed is almost enveloped by a red aril.[1]

Trichilia dregeana es un especie de árbol perteneciente a la familia Meliaceae. Es originaria de África.[1]

Descripción

Es un árbol de hoja perenne que alcanza hasta los 20 m de altura;. Con el tronco de hasta 1,8 m de diámetro, alto y recto al crecer dentro del bosque, pero ramificado a los 2 m de altura, en una copa densa, de muy amplia difusión en lugares abiertos. Las hojas tienen hasta 260 mm de largo. Inflorescencia con muchas flores en las masculinas, siempre pocas flores en las femeninas. Fruta de 30-50 mm de diámetro. Número cromosómico: 2n = c.360 (Etiopía).

Distribución y hábitat

Muy extendida en África tropical, pero con algunas separaciones importantes, principalmente en las zonas de montaña desde Guinea a Camerún y desde Etiopía hasta Sudáfrica, también en Angola. En el sur de África en el bosque siempre verde, sobre todo en las regiones de mayor precipitación; desde cerca del nivel del mar hasta los 1 250 metros.
