Most abundant in open lowland areas near swamps or large rivers.

Distribucion en Costa Rica:
Distribucion General: Panama to eastern Peru; Bolivia and Brazil (Para, Rondonia, Mato Grosso, ?Minas Gerais); Trinidad; Suriname.

Females feed on the blood of mammals, including humans and horses.

Immature stages unknown.

Hind tibiae without apical spurs; basicosta without strong setae; third antennal segment with at most an acute dorsobasal angle; tibiae not or only slightly inflated; wings not glass clear or abdomen drawn out into an elongated point; mesopleura shiny or pearly tomentose in contrast to the rest of the pleuron; labella unsclerotized; frontoclypeus shiny and inflated; wings with a dark subapical patch; mesoscutum with a prominent shiny black area, lacking anterolateral shiny dark spots, the median black shiny area crossed by a prominent central yellow tomentose line that is widened posteriorly.
