A small hoverfly, Toxomerus geminatus. This is a female, and was taking nectar from a cultivated native aster after a rainstorm. There were several fresh-appearing flies on the flowers--I think the rain might have led to a fresh emergence (eclosure) from pupae. Length is 6-8 mm.
Visiting a flowering dogwood, Cornus florida. Appears to be a female, based on the ovipositing -like abdominal tip. Length about 7 mm--very petite.-BugGuide accountPCCA20090417-7972A
