Cells solitary; lorica usually barrel-shaped with protoplast attached to base of chamber; anterior end of chamber terminated by a transverse costa; one other transverse costa usually present; usually 7 longitudinal; anterior tips of longitudinal costae attach the anterior ring forming T-joins; pedicel, if present, is compound; division tectiform; arine and brackish water habitats; worldwide.
