Syntypes (3): ZMB 6659, 6659a, and FMNH 95836 (formerly ZMB 6659b). ZMB 6659 designated lectotype by Roze, 1989, Am. Mus. Novit. 2932:1-15[14].

Type-locality: Puebla, by implication. Restricted to Izúcar de Matamoros, Puebla, Mexico, by Smith and Taylor, 1950, Univ. Kansas Sci. Bull. 33:313-380[341]; restricted to warmer environments of southern Mexico, Matamoros, puebla by lectotype designation.

Two subspecies, namely M. l. laticollaris (Peters, 1869) and M. l. maculirostris Roze, 1967, were recognized by Roze, 1983.
