Squalidus banarescui Chen & Chang 2007

Distinguished from its congeners by the unique combination of the following characters: dorsal fin rays 3+7-8, anal fin rays 3+6, pectoral fin rays 1+13; lateral line scales 34-36, predorsal scale rows 10-11; body robust, the transverse rows of papillae on snout densely arranged and short barbels approximately equal to 1/2 of eye diameter and body greenish-silver on dorsal and silver-white on ventral side; dorsal side scattered with some irregularly black spots; snout with a dark bar on lateral side; belly unmarked or having a few dark spots on lateral side, a row of 6-7 grayish-black longitudinal blotches along lateral side of body; each lateral line scale with an L-shaped black mark; dorsal and caudal fin with few rows of minute black spots; body with longitudinal grayish and silver stripes (Ref. 57944).

台灣的特有種。本種目前僅發現於中臺灣地區烏溪流域中、下游之緩流區及附近水渠及野塘等。現生之族群頗不穩定，人為干擾頗大，未來仍有瀕危之虞。

小型魚類，罕見魚種。

背鰭3(不分枝軟條)+ 7-8(分枝軟條)；臀鰭3(不分枝軟條)+ 6(分枝軟條)；胸鰭1(不分枝軟條)+ 13(分枝軟條)；腹鰭1(不分枝軟條)+ 7-8(分枝軟條)；咽齒式 5，3-3，5；側線鱗數 34-36(通常為35)；背前鱗數 10-11(通常為11)。體延長而略厚實，側扁而腹部圓。頭中大，頭背面平直。吻略尖長。眼頗大；口斜裂，延伸未達眼前緣下方。上頜長於下頜。口角具一對短鬚，長度約為眼徑1/2。體被有中大型的圓鱗。側線完全，沿中央至尾柄基部。胸鰭末端延伸未達腹鰭基部。體背側銀綠色，腹側銀白至淡黃色；體背部散布不規則黑色斑點。吻部另具一條黑色斜斑。體側中央各具一條黑色與金黃色縱紋。每個側線鱗上具有一個黑色新月形斑。背鰭及尾鰭具數條由細小黑斑組成的帶紋；其餘各鰭透明無斑或有少數斑點。

初級淡水魚。喜好棲息於溪流下游地區的緩流區，有水生植物群集的水體為主。屬於下層近底棲魚類。主要以底棲之無脊椎動物及有機碎屑為食。

Squalidus banarescui is a species of cyprinid fish endemic to the Dadu River in Taiwan.

Named in honor of Petru Bănărescu (1921-2009), Institute of Biology, Bucharest, for his “great” contributions to Taiwanese cyprinid taxonomy, especially the subfamily Gobioninae, between 1960 and 1973.
