Trees; young shoots, petioles, leaf blades abaxially, and rachis of inflorescences yellowish brown puberulent. Petiole 5-10(-15) mm; leaf blade ovate-elliptic, elliptic, or sometimes obovate-elliptic, 9-20 × (4-)6-10 cm, thickly papery, abaxially puberulent or glabrescent, base cuneate to rounded and usually inaequilateral, margin serrate except basally entire, apex mucronate to acuminate; midvein adaxially impressed; secondary veins 15-25 on each side of midvein. Female inflorescence ca. 40 cm. Infructescences dense, 10-27 cm. Cupule globose, 3.5-4 cm in diam., usually splitting into 4 segments when mature, wall ca. 1 mm thick; bracts spinelike, entirely covering cupule, to 1.5 cm, straight or bent, base connate into bundles. Nut 1(or 2) per cupule, broadly conical, 1-1.4 cm in diam., densely hairy; scar covering ca. 1/4 of nut. Fl. Mar-May, fr. Sep-Nov of following year.

Castanopsis indica oder die Indische Kastanie, ist eine in Südostasien vorkommende Baumart aus der Familie der Buchengewächse (Fagaceae). Die Nüsse sind essbar, ähnlich denen der Esskastanie.

Castanopsis indica ist ein immergrüner, bis 30 Meter hoher Baum.

Die einfachen und kurz gestielten, bespitzten bis zugespitzten, leicht ledrigen sowie wechselständigen Laubblätter sind länglich, elliptisch, eiförmig oder verkehrt-eiförmig. Der Blattrand ist gezähnt.

Castanopsis indica ist einhäusig monözisch. Die Fruchtbecher (Cupulae) sind mit einfachen Stacheln besetzt. Die Stacheln sind gerade, dichtstehend und verdecken die Oberfläche des Fruchtbechers komplett. Die Fruchtbecher sind inklusive Stacheln höchstens vier Zentimeter im Durchmesser, meist 2,5 bis 4 Zentimeter. Meist stehen die Fruchtbecher in Gruppen von zwei oder drei.

Die Nuss ist länger als breit und konisch oder eiförmig. Meist sind sie auf eine Längsseite hin gekrümmt.

Blütezeit ist von Februar bis Dezember, meist von Februar bis Mai. Die Fruchtreife erfolgt von Februar bis Dezember, meist von Mai bis Juli. Meist werden gleichzeitig Blüten und Früchte gebildet.

Die Chromosomenzahl beträgt 2n = 24.[1]

Verbreitung und Standorte

Die Art kommt in Thailand, Indien, Nepal, Myanmar, China, Taiwan, Laos und Vietnam vor. Sie wächst in tieferen Bergwäldern, in laubwerfenden Dipterocarpus-Wäldern, in feuchten höheren laubwerfenden Mischwäldern und in offenem Grasland in rund 500 bis 2000 m Seehöhe.

Castanopsis indica is a tree in the family Fagaceae.

Description

Castanopsis indica is a tallish tree, growing up around 8–14 m (26–46 ft) in height with a dense, full crown. The leaves are thick and leathery with a serrated edge. They are oblong and elliptical, with an acute tip, are nearly evergreen and have a short petiole. The bark of the tree is rough and grey. The fruit is reddish-brown and round, found in small clusters, and is covered with long, thin spines. The fruit is often fed upon by squirrels.[3]

The tree can be found between 300–1,000 m (980–3,280 ft) above sea level.[3]

Distribution and habitat

Castanopsis indica grows naturally in Nepal, Bhutan to Taiwan.[4]

Uses

The nuts of the tree are considered edible. The wood is locally used in construction and the bark can be used in tanning.[5] In Nepal the leaves are used to wrap things.[6]
