Endemic to Lanai, East Maui and Big Island of Hawaii. Last wild population from Big Island in Puako destroyed by cattle. Some outplanting populations. Closely related to Abutilon eremitopetalum and possible hybrid between the two found in this garden.

This rare and endangered plant is endemic to the Wai'anae mountains of western Oahu. By 2010, the USFWS reported 137 mature plants in 18 populations (http://ecos.fws.gov/docs/five_year_review/doc3799.pdf). Note large shrub in photo. Shrubs usually reach 1.5-3m in height, occasionally as high as 6m.
