This species was first described by Mackie & Pleijel (1995) on pages 116-120, figures 3 and 5. A comparison of diagnostic characters of this species vs. Melinna cristata and M. elisabethae can be found in their table 1.
The type locality of Melinna albicincta is in Sweden, Kosterfjord, southwest of Yttre Vattenholmen.
