Trophon drygalskii Thiele, 1912 (Figs 354, 355)

Trophon drygalskii Thiele, 1912: 213, pl. 13, fig. 25; Smith, 1915: 73; Powell, 1958: 197; Powell, 1960: 154; Egorova, 1982: 38, fig. 165.

MATERIAL EXAMINED: NZOI Stns A449, A470, A530, Z1807; Eltanin Stns 418, 1003, 1995; USNM 613004, 72°05.8'S, 172°15.2'E, 392 m.

DISTRIBUTION: Trophon drygalskii has been recorded from the Davis Sea (c. 90ºE). off Enderby Land (c. 50°E, 193-300 m), from the Ross Sea (267-392 m) and from off the Antarctic Peninsula (210-311 m).

REMARKS: Thiele's holotype is 7 mm in length. The largest specimen seen by the writer (from the Ross Sea) is 8.4 mm long. In seven specimens, axial lamellae on the penultimate whorl ranged from 26-29 (mean 27) and on the last whorl from 28-34 (mean 30).

Trophon drygalskii appears to be allied to the other relatively common small antarctic trophonine, T. minutus Strebel, but is readily distinguished by the marked median constriction of the last whorl in drygalskii, and the simple form of the lamellae, which in minutus are rolled forwards (adaperturally) along the axis. Trophon drygalskii appears to be commonest around the antarctic continent from about 90°E eastwards to the Ross Sea to about 179°E, while T. minutus appears to be commoner in the South American sector. However, the ranges of the two species overlap, and both have been collected at the one station.”
