Verspreiding en leefgebied

Deze soort komt voor van de hooglanden van het noordelijke deel van Centraal-Tanzania en centraal Kenia tot oostelijk Soedan en centraal Ethiopië en telt 2 ondersoorten:

• Dendropicos spodocephalus spodocephalus: oostelijk Soedan en centraal en zuidelijk Ethiopië.
• Dendropicos spodocephalus rhodeogaster: van centraal Kenia tot het noordelijke deel van Centraal-Tanzania.

Rödbukig askspett^[2] (Dendropicos spodocephalus) är en fågel i familjen hackspettar inom ordningen hackspettartade fåglar.^[3] IUCN kategoriserar arten som livskraftig.^[1] Fågeln är inte nära släkt med askspett (Mulleripicus fulvus).

Rödbukig askspett delas in i två underarter:^[3]

• D. s. spodocephalus – förekommer i östra Sudan och höglandet i centrala och södra Etiopien
• D. s. rhodeogaster – förekommer i högländer från centrala Kenya till norra och central Tanzania

Arten behandlas ibland som underart till gulbukig askspett (Dendropicos goertae).^[4]
