Eucithara is a genus of small to quite large sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Mangeliidae.^[1]

This genus has been a convenient dumping ground for many Indo-Pacific species. A profound study is still lacking and polyphyly probably occurs, as shown by the radulae of the few species examined.^[2]

Description

Species in this genus show a rather solid turreted-fusiform shell, sculptured by bold longitudinal ribs, over-run by dense spiral threads, and decussated by an even finer radial striatum. The aperture is as long, or longer, than the spire, fortified externally by a stout varix which ascends the previous whorl, includes a semi-circular sinus, and extends a free edge over the mouth. Within the outer lip are a series of short entering ridges, and the columella bears a corresponding series of deeply entering horizontal bars.^[3]

Distribution

This genus has a wide distribution in the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the East China Sea; off Australia (Northern Territory, Queensland, Tasmania, Western Australia).

Eucithara é um gênero de gastrópodes pertencente a família Mangeliidae.^[1]

Este gênero tem sido um conveniente depósito de lixo para muitas espécies do Indo-Pacífico. Falta ainda um estudo aprofundado e provavelmente ocorre polifilia, como mostram as rádulas das poucas espécies examinadas.^[2]

Descrição

As espécies deste gênero apresentam uma concha fusiforme-torreada bastante sólida, esculpida por nervuras longitudinais arrojadas, encimada por densos fios espirais e decussada por um estriado radial ainda mais fino. A abertura é tão longa, ou mais longa, que o pináculo, fortificada externamente por uma variz robusta que ascende ao verticilo anterior, inclui um seio semicircular e estende uma borda livre sobre a boca. Dentro do lábio externo há uma série de cristas de entrada curtas, e a columela possui uma série correspondente de barras horizontais que entram profundamente.^[3]

Distribuição

Este gênero tem uma ampla distribuição no Mar Vermelho, Golfo Pérsico, Oceano Índico, Oceano Pacífico, Mar da China Oriental; ao largo da Austrália (Território do Norte, Queensland, Tasmânia, Austrália Ocidental).
