California has an estimated population of 2,200 blues, the largest animals alive today. In late summer & early fall they congregate off central California where they feed on tiny shrimplike creatures, krill, that they filter from the water with their baleen. This is a young male lying on its back. Blocks of baleen have fallen on the sand.
