MATERIAL EXAMINED: Eltanin Stns 288, 344, 370, 959, 966, 974, 1284; Hero Stns 655, 656; William Scoresby Stn 755; Discovery II Stns 51, 388; Vema Stns V-17-19A, V-17-48.
DISTRIBUTION: Tectonatica impervia is confined to a restricted area from the Burdwood Bank and the Falkland Islands across the southern Patagonian Shelf to Magellan Strait and the seas around Tiera del Fuego in 4-200 m. (For Eltanin Stn 288, the depth range is so wide that it can hardly supply firm data.) Cantera and Arnaud record T. impervia from Kerguelen Island and the Crozets.
REMARKS: Rochebrune and Mabille described Natica payeni from Magellan Strait and off Tierra del Fuego. Strebel (1906: 135) considered N. payeni no different from impervia. Examination of the syntypes of N. payeni show that they represent half-grown shells of impervia. The slight differences shown in proportion in the figures of impervia and payeni presented by Mabille and Rochebrune are no more than the variation seen in a series of impervia. The name payeni does not appear to have been mentioned in works on Magellanic Mollusca, apart from a listing by Carcelles and Williamson (1951) since Strebel's action in 1906.”
