Negria: Lord Howe Island's Pumpkin Tree

Negria is a monotypic genus in the Gesneriaceae endemic to Lord Howe Island in the Southwest Pacific Ocean. Its one species is named Negria rhabdothamnoides and has the common name Pumpkin Tree, It is the only true tree in the Gesneriaceae in the entire world. It grows in damp forest, especially cloud forest, in the southern mountainous part of Lord Howe Island, especially on the summit plateau of Mount Gower, but also on the east side of Mount Lidgbird. It has slightly waxy oval, entire leaves that are pale on the underside and has yellow-orange tubular flowers. It is a relatively small tree, but has been described as "The only Gesneriad you can climb". See P.S. Green 1994 for more information.
