Purslane Leaved Aizoon

Aizoon canariense L.

A perennial with slender roots. Stem woody, papillose to velutinous. Leaves spathulate, up to 8 cm long, 5-9 mm broad. Flowers axillary solitary, sessile, c. 2.5 mm long. Sepals 5, ovate, c. 2 mm long, velutinous, persistent. Stamens usually 20, poly-adelphous, the groups alternating with the sepals; filaments c. 1 mm long. Styles 5, free, c. 1 mm long, papillose, linear, persistent. Capsule c. 4.5 mm broad, 5 angled, papillose. Seeds c. 0.9 mm long, ribbed, black, shiny.

Prostrate, thick-stemmed annual or perennial herb, with stems up to 40 cm long, often papillose. Leaves subcircular to obovate, entire, decurrent at base, pilose. Flowers solitary, sessile. Perianth segments yellowish inside, greenish or reddish and pilose outside. Fruit red or pink, star-shaped, depressed in the middle.

Aizoon canariense

Aizoon canariense is a species of small leafy annual plant in the family Aizoaceae.[2]

Description

The plant can grow up to 25 cm height. Its branches spread on the ground, its leaves are petiolate, somewhat fleshy and hairy. It has small flowers with 1–3 mm long sepals, yellowish inside, and no petals.[3]

Distribution

The plant A. canariense can be found in warm arid to semi-arid areas including Macaronesia (on Madeira, Canary Islands and Cape Verde), Arabia, Pakistan, North Africa and Southern Africa.[4]
