Operation Origin: Site 25, Boatswain Bird Rock, in empty barnacle shell,7 m [?]: 1 female [3.3].

Other Collections: Ascension Island, T. Corny: 2 males [3.8–5.9], 1 female [3.6] (BMNH 81.27).—Olson (1970), McArthur Point, sandy bottom tide pool: 1 male (4.5), 2 females [4.8–6.6].

SIZE.—Carapace lengths of males, 3.0–9.8 mm; of females, 3.1–7.6 mm; of ovigerous females, 3.2–4.5 mm; of juveniles, 1.9–3.3 mm. These are considerably smaller than the specimens from St. Helena reported by Chace (1966); there the largest male was cl 12.0, the largest female cl 12.4 mm.

HABITAT.—In almost all intertidal habitats on Ascension, including the coral pool inland of Shelly Beach. One specimen was taken in a barnacle at 7 meters.

DISTRIBUTION.—Known only from Ascension and St. Helena; intertidal and shallow subtidal.

Pachygrapsus loveridgei ( Italian )

Pachygrapsus loveridgei Chace, 1966 è un granchio marino appartenente alla famiglia Grapsidae[1].

Descrizione

Presenta un carapace convesso, striato, più largo che lungo; in genere esso non supera i 13 mm di larghezza[2]. Il margine frontale è sinuoso, i margini laterali convergono posteriormente. I chelipedi sono pressoché uguali tra loro e le chele sono robuste.

Si distingue dal simile Pachygrapsus transversus grazie al carapace meno appiattito, alla presenza di striature più evidenti su di esso[2], alle minori dimensioni[3] e alla presenza di un tubercolo sul margine inferiore del mero (secondo articolo dell'endopodite) del quinto pereiopode[4].

Distribuzione e habitat

Vive sulle scogliere di Sant'Elena e dell'isola di Ascensione fino a 7 m di profondità, di solito in zone ricche di cirripedi[3]. Il locus typicus è Rupert's Bay (Sant'Elena)[5]. È molto comune sulle boe[3].
