Trophic Strategy

Found along coasts (Refs. 5377, 87676). Epipelagic in nearshore waters (Ref. 6523). Oceanic (Ref. 122898). The larvae are known to feed on zooplankton (Ref. 9658).
Biology

Pelagic, coastal species which can fly over long distances. It is thought that this behavior is a means to escape danger. This flying fish is not commercially exploited although it is very good to eat (Ref. 5377). Spawns during summer in Italian waters. Eggs with filaments over the entire surface (Ref. 6523).

Distribution

Tropical and temperate waters of the Atlantic. Found north in Chesapeake Bay to mouth of Potomac River, also coast of New Jersey, and Atlantic coast of Maryland.
