Daruma Stinger

Description: Characterized by having variable color, often shades of red or brown with white mottling; pectoral, pelvic, anal and caudal fins with dark cross bands and/or rows of white spots; large and rounded head; eyes lateral; extremely short snout, nearly vertical anterior profile; strongly oblique mouth; two broad spines over upper lip on lacrimal; deep occipital pit; suborbital ridge lacking distinct spines; slight hump in front of dorsal fin; depth of body 2.2 in SL (Ref. 90102).

Inhabits trawling grounds (Ref. 57406). Benthic (Ref. 75154). Anterolateral glandular grooves with venom gland (Ref. 57406).

分布於西太平洋海域，由日本到澳洲。臺灣北部、西南部、東北部及澎湖等均有分布。

小型魚類，除學術研究外，不具經濟價值。

體粗壯，稍延長，後部側扁。頭粗大，多凹凸，眼間隔間具有一寬廣的隆起稜，其後方有一似四方型的凹槽。眼中大，上側位，周緣有皮突。前鰓蓋骨5棘；鰓蓋骨2棘。唇具皮瓣。體裸露。背鰭連續，硬棘部鰭膜稍凹入，硬棘短，具 XIV，軟條 5-7(通常為6)，最後之鰭條有膜與尾柄相連；臀鰭基底稍長於背鰭軟條部的基底，具硬棘 III，軟條5-6(通常為5)，最後之鰭條有膜與尾柄相連；胸鰭寬圓，延伸至肛門後端，無游離鰭；腹鰭鰭條 I+4，胸位，上方鰭條有膜而連於胸部；尾鰭圓截形。體色多變化，ㄧ般多呈黃褐色，體側有寬大的橫紋與黃斑；胸鰭、臀鰭及尾鰭具6-8條深色橫紋。

近海底棲魚種，常隱身於珊瑚叢或海藻叢中，以守株待兔般快速捕捉過往之小魚或甲殼類等為食。背鰭鰭棘下具毒腺，是海中危險生物。
