體呈橢圓形而側扁，標準體長為體高之1.8-2.0倍。吻短而鈍圓。口中型；頜齒兩列，小而呈圓錐狀。眶下骨裸出，下緣具鋸齒；前鰓蓋骨後緣具鋸齒。體被櫛鱗；鼻部具鱗；側線之有孔鱗片16-17個。背鰭單一，軟條部不延長而略呈角形，硬棘XIII，軟條13-15；臀鰭硬棘II，軟條14-15；胸鰭鰭條16-17；尾鰭叉形，上下葉末端呈圓狀。成魚體暗色至幾乎黑色的；眼睛具黃色的虹彩。胸鰭灰色，基部全為黑色；餘鰭暗色。
棲地

主要發現於水道與外礁斜坡區，也可在水流向下且清澈的礁石平臺區至水深40
公尺處的水域。獨居或形成小群魚群生存。以浮游動物與底藻為食。
