One of the Hemimastigophora, a poorly known group of flagellates, in which there are two slightly spiralling rows of flagella extending from the front end of the cell. Surface of body supported by skeletal plates. At one time thought to be Gondwanian ... but this view has lapsed. Phase contrast micrograph.

Portrait of the rare colorless heterotrophic flagellate, Paramastix conifera (Skuja, 1948). The cell is broadly pyriform with an anterior papilla surrounded by a wreath of flagella. There is a prominent spherical nucleus and posterior contractile vacuole (seen in this image). Collected from an organically enriched freshwater spring near Boise, Idaho April 2004. DIC optics.

Lateral view of the rare colorless heterotrophic flagellate, Paramastix conifera (Skuja, 1948). The cell is broadly pyriform to spherical with an anterior papilla surrounded by a wreath of flagella (seen in this image). There is a prominent spherical nucleus (seen here) and posterior contractile vacuole. Collected from a freshwater agricultural irrigation ditch near McCall, Idaho May 2005.Phase contrast.
