Very slender annual, 3.2 dm. high or less, usually freely branched, finely pedicellate-glandular; leaves whorled in 5's to middle of stem or higher, the lowest lance-obovate, 3-4.5 mm. long, 1 mm. wide, the middle and upper linear or linear-lanceolate, 5-12.5 mm. long, 0.5-1.5 mm. wide, cuspidate, slightly revolute; peduncles 1-4 cm. long; racemes cylindric, rather loose, 4.5-6 mm. thick, the axis 1.3-8 cm. long; pedicels 0.6-0.8 mm. long; flowers rosy-purple, rarely white; sepals elliptic to oblong, obtuse, 0.9-1.2 mm. long; wings obovate-oval, 2.3-2.5 mm. long, 1.3 mm. wide, rounded, short-cuneate at base, 3-nerved; keel 2.1 mm. long, the crest of 3-4 lobes on each side; capsule elliptic, 1.5 mm. long; seed 1.1 mm. long, clothed with incurved uncinate-tipped hairs, spreading when wet; aril obsolete.
Type locality: Near Esmeralda, Venezuela.
Distribution: Lower California and northern Mexico to Guatemala; Cuba; also in South America.
