In North America, Cheilanthes leucopoda is known only from the Edwards Plateau in west central Texas. It is unique among local Cheilanthes species in being a sexual diploid that consistently produces 32 spores per sporangium.

Stems compact, usually 4--10 mm diam.; scales uniformly brown, linear-subulate, straight to slightly contorted, loosely appressed, persistent. Leaves clustered, 7--30 cm; vernation circinate. Petiole straw-colored, shallowly grooved distally on adaxial surface. Blade elongate-pentagonal, 4-pinnate at base, 3--10 cm wide; rachis grooved adaxially, lacking scales, with monomorphic pubescence. Pinnae not articulate, color of stalk continuing into pinna base, basal pair larger than adjacent pair, strongly inequilateral, proximal basiscopic pinnules greatly enlarged, appearing hirsute adaxially. Costae green or straw-colored adaxially for entire length; abaxial scales absent. Ultimate segments oblong to lanceolate, not especially beadlike, the largest 3--5 mm, abaxially and adaxially hirsute with long, noncapitate hairs. False indusia marginal, weakly differentiated, 0.05--0.25 mm wide. Sori usually discontinuous, concentrated on apical and lateral lobes. Sporangia containing 32 spores. 2 n = 60.

Cheilanthes leucopoda es un helecho, miembro de la familia Pteridaceae, subfamilia Cheilanthoideae; el nombre de la especie (C. leucopoda) significa “pie blanco”, mientras que el género (Cheilanthes), se deriva del griego “cheilos” (labio) y “anthos” (flor).

Clasificación y descripción

Rizoma: compacto, horizontal, de entre 4 y 10 mm de diámetro, con escamas de forma linear; frondes: de 35 cm de largo creciendo en forma de manojo; pecíolo: de 2/3 del largo de la fronda, de color pajizo con un surco en la parte superior, con numerosos pelillos presentes; lámina: de forma ampliamente pentagonal, cuatripinnada, de 5 a 15 cm de ancho; raquis: con un surco en la parte superior (adaxial); pinnas: los segmentos de las pinnas basales tiene forma de cuentas, mientras que los últimos segmentos son de forma oblonga a lanceolados, se presentan pelillos rígidos en amabas superficies; soros: son discontinuos, se concentran en los segmentos apicales y laterales; indusio: se presenta un falso indusio formado por los márgenes de los segmentos curvados hacia abajo.[1]

Distribución

Se distribuye solo en Texas (E.U.A.) y el norte y centro de México.[2]

Ambiente

Terrestre, prefiere sitios con rocas calizas con cierta exposición al sol, tolera cierto grado de sequía.[3]

Estado de conservación

No se encuentra sujeta a ningún estatus de conservación.[4]
