Brief Summary

provided by EOL authors
The black magpie is a lowland forest bird from southeast Asia likely to be in the family Corvidae but difficult to place. Its heavy black body suggests a crow. Its upcurving nasal bristles (and a short crest in the Borneo subspecies) and general form suggest a jay. Its longer tail hints at magpie or treepie. A social bird, it forages in small groups in the canopy on fruits, invertebrates and small mammals. It has a varied vocal repertoire including mimicry, magpie-like chattering, and both hoarse and ringing notes.

Malayan black magpie

provided by wikipedia EN

The Malayan black magpie (Platysmurus leucopterus) is a species of bird in the family Corvidae. Despite its name, it is neither a magpie nor, as was long believed, a jay, but a treepie. Treepies are a distinct group of corvids externally similar to magpies.[2]

Distribution and habitat

It is found in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Thailand. The Bornean black magpie (P. atterimus) was formerly considered a subspecies.[3][4] The natural habitats of the Malayan black magpie are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and subtropical or tropical mangrove forest. It is threatened by habitat loss.
