Distinguished from L. maculicauda in head shape, tricuspid inner teeth, fewer dorsal spines, fin markings, and male color pattern; from L. strigatus in snout shape, rounded dental arcade, tricuspid inner teeth, male color pattern; from L. textilis in snout shape, equal length of jaws, and fin markings; from L. shiranus in its shorter, less pointed snout, and fin coloration.

The Chisumulu pearl (Labidochromis flavigulis) is a species of cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi where it is only known to occur in areas with rocky substrates around Likoma Island and Chisumulu Island. This species can reach a length of 6.8 centimetres (2.7 in) SL. It can also be found in the aquarium trade.[2]
