Inhabits high altitude headwater tributaries at elevations between 790-1600 m (Ref. 2847). Is an omnivore and egg laying species, considered a peaceful community fish and prefers the following aquarium conditions: pH=7.8, H=16, 19°C water temperature; rock, plant and driftwood cover (Ref. 6398).

The mountain rainbowfish (Melanotaenia monticola) is a species of rainbowfish in the subfamily Melanotaeniinae. It is endemic to Papua New Guinea, where it occurs in the Southern Highlands between Mendi and Lake Kutubu, in the Purari River system.[2]
