體極側扁；背緣銳脊狀，高陡隆起；頭部眼上方圓，往下至吻部幾垂直。吻鈍；口中大，前位，略可向前伸出；上下頜各具錐形牙一行，前端各具彎形犬齒各一對。前鰓蓋邊緣具鋸齒。體被中大圓鱗；頰部被鱗片，自眼下方延伸至口緣後方。D.

7+12；背鰭II、III棘間具膜相連；腹鰭第一軟條延長成絲狀，幾達臀鰭第一軟條緣。體淡橄欖綠；背鰭第VI-VII棘下方體側有一約佔2-5鱗片寬之黑斑，黑斑所在之最下方鱗片即第八或九側線鱗，體側另於胸鰭正下方具一大型白斑，白斑前緣具黄色斑駁；背鰭與臀鰭淡藍色，有些許的淡黄色至橙黄色斑點；尾鰭有
8條垂直淡黄色點帶。以前所記載之麗虹彩鯛(/Xyrichtys
evides/)為本種之同種異名。
棲地

主要棲息於乾淨清澈且為砂泥底的潟湖區或礁緣外圍區；通常大群的活動，偶爾也當個獨行俠。白天捕食附著於海床的貝類，以及在岩上攀爬的小型甲殼類，晚上則鑽入砂地裡休息。當受到驚嚇時，立即鑽到砂泥底躲藏。

This species reaches a length of 20.4 cm (8.0 in).[2]
Etymology
The fish is named in honor of Albertus Baldwin (1865-1935), who while employed by the U.S. Government's Departments of Agriculture, Interior and Commerce, illustrated scientific reports, with his paintings of American and Hawaiian fishes. [3]
