Inhabits intertidal benches ands exposed reef flats.

Adults occur in the intertidal zone of rocky shores, benches and surge seaward reefs (Ref. 9710). Oviparous. Eggs are demersal and adhesive (Ref. 205), and are attached to the substrate via a filamentous, adhesive pad or pedestal (Ref. 94114). Larvae are planktonic, often found in shallow, coastal waters (Ref. 94114).

分布於印度-太平洋區，由Comoros至Easter群島等，北至日本，南至Kermadec及拉帕群島。台灣分布於南部及蘭嶼等海域。

小型魚類，僅具學術研究價值。

體延長形，稍側扁，似圓柱狀；頭鈍短。頭頂無冠膜；鼻鬚掌狀分支；眼上鬚羽狀分支；頸鬚單一不分支。上唇全具鋸齒緣，下唇平滑，齒骨具一犬齒。D. XIII, 15-16；A. II, 16-17； P. 14；V. I, 4。背鰭具深缺刻，最後一棘極小，背鰭與尾柄相連，臀鰭不與尾柄相連，成熟雄魚臀鰭各棘與軟條末端不膨大；尾鰭鰭條分叉。雄魚眼後方有一黑斜線，頭部下方有3-4條黑白間隔的V形紋，黑紋鑲白邊，活魚時橙黃色；體側有6對不明顯的暗橫帶；背鰭棘部有黑白斑，軟條部具斜或不規則的暗線及白線；臀鰭黑色，鰭緣白色；尾鰭有3-4條黑色帶；胸鰭灰黑色，基部有不明顯黑帶；腹鰭灰黑色；雌魚同雄魚，但色帶較淡。

主要棲息於岩石岸的潮間帶、珊瑚礁的浪拂區等，以藻類、碎屑和小型無脊椎動物為食。
