Iris petrana is one of the southernmost Oncocyclus irises. It is emdemic yto S Israel and S Jordan. It has normally dark purple flowers, but as u can see, there are many colour variants in its main reserve - Yerucham Iris Reserve in the NE Negev Desert.
Iris petrana is a rare one growing in the north-eastern Negev (southern Israel) and in Edom mountains (southern Jordan). It is variable in flower colour and occurs on loamy semi-desert. It suffers from overgrazing, but is protected in one reserve in Israel. the plant in the picture is a pale one, most plants have dark purple flowers.
